UNC Greensboro’s Department of Philosophy will host Krista Thomason, a UNCG alumna and author of Naked: The Dark Side of Shame and Moral Life, for a Zoom talk on the topic of online shaming.Social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook have become mediums for public shaming of bad behavior. Defenders of this practice claim that it can be a powerful tool to change behavior. The targets of online shaming also seem to deserve it: often recipients of shaming are sexists and racists. Can these shaming practices be morally justified? Thomason argues that there are significant moral risks to online shaming. Shaming may seem effective, but it comes at the cost of damaging what it is meant to protect.Anyone interested in attending can email Taylor Heise ([email protected]) to be added to the GoogleCalendar invite.
