Community Placemaking Action Lab
The Community Placemaking Action Lab (CPAL) brings together representatives from two communities in North Carolina, Princeville and Greensboro, to critically examine issues at the intersection of race, gender, migration, and environmental justice. Princeville is the United States’ first independently governed community founded by African Americans. CPAL collaborators include UNCG faculty and students, Princeville town leadership and community members, and Greensboro-based organizations and institutions.
CPAL’s past projects include contributions to the nationally traveling “Climates of Inequality” exhibit, which was installed in Princeville and Greensboro in 2023. Ongoing projects include devised-theatre work conducted by Princeville community members and UNCG faculty and students, and “Portraits and Poetry,” a series that documents Princeville resident’s experiences through their poetry.
CPAL is supported by UNCG’s Humanities Network and Consortium, the Institute for Community and Economic Engagement, the Humanities Action Lab at Rutgers University, and the National Endowment for the Humanities.
