Big Read Panel Discussion: “Black Fatherhood: A Community Conversation”, 2/9/21, 7PM

Posted on February 09, 2021

On February 9th from 7-8PM EST, we are co-sponsoring a panel discussion moderated by Gerald Holmes of Tayari Jones’ novel “Silver Sparrow,” focusing around themes of Black fatherhood.

In 2011, Tayari Jones published “Silver Sparrow,” a novel set in 1980s Georgia that is about a man who fathers two daughters and marries the mother of each daughter. He is a bigamist who splits his time between two homes and only one of the family’s is aware of the other. Told from the perspective of his daughters, their voices tell how his decision has an undeniable impact on them and their mothers.

Jones’s novel points to the challenges of fatherhood, including the decisions fathers make and how those decisions have a lasting emotional impact on their partners and children. Inspired by Jones’s novel, panelists will explore “What is the role of Black fathers in supporting their children in 2021”?
